ABSTRACT:
Sir David Attenborough celebrated his 100th birthday on May 8th. While Sir David enjoyed celebratory cheers and well-wishes from world leaders, not a peep was heard from the US White House. We live in an upside-down era of American leadership from the White House. Perhaps the President’s staff overlooked the birthday and failed to alert the President? His social media was silent for this occasion. Sir David’s lifelong science-led advocacy for global conservation contrasts sharply with the Trump administration’s aggressive environmental deregulation. While Attenborough views climate change as a man-made disaster demanding international cooperation, renewable energy expansion, and strict ecosystem protections, President Trump has denounced climate change as a “hoax” and withdrawn the US from key global climate frameworks. Economically, the administration has moved in the opposite direction of Attenborough’s vision by enacting Executive Order 14154 to fast-track fossil fuels, eliminating green energy incentives, opening protected marine monuments to commercial fishing, and exiting the High Seas Treaty. This stark ideological divide is further illustrated by deep funding cuts to wildlife agencies and a historic “God Squad” committee vote that exempted the entire Gulf of Mexico from key aspects of the U.S. Endangered Species Act. While Attenborough views humanity’s relationship with the natural world as an urgent crisis requiring science-led, internationally coordinated action to preserve biodiversity, the Trump administration treats the environment strictly as an economic opportunity where ecological regulations are unnecessary burdens.
