ABSTRACT:
During a February 2026 White House event announcing the repeal of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) greenhouse gas endangerment finding, President Donald Trump referred to “the hated [vehicle] start-stop feature,” and EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin called it “almost universally despised.” However, evidence shows that the technology provides modest fuel savings, typically about 2 to 3.5% and up to nearly 10% in favorable traffic, with corresponding CO₂ reductions. Its effects on particulate emissions vary by engine, fuel, and temperature. Studies have not established that properly designed systems cause significant premature engine damage, although long-term evidence on internal engine wear is limited and battery service life may be 20 to 50% shorter. A scenario-based life-cycle analysis found net CO₂ savings, but a broader life-cycle and impact assessment is needed. Consumer dislike does not negate measurable environmental benefits. Whether to incentivize the technology is a policy question; whether it delivers those benefits is a scientific one. The two should not be conflated.
